2 Heavy Productions and Reading Rep are delighted to be staging David Mamet’s RACE. This provocative production will challenge audiences and provoke debate in Reading this spring.

As Mamet states, the central theme of the production is ‘race and the lies we tell each other on the subject.’ The play revolves around three attorneys, two black, one white, who take on a case in which a white and well-established businessman is accused of committing a crime against a young black woman. Described as ‘an engaging brew of wit, rage, and shifting sympathies’ by the Independent on Sunday, we are excited to bring this daring piece of theatre to audiences in Reading. In true Mamet fashion, the play exudes controversy, and will leave the audience with plenty to talk about on the way home.

The stellar cast includes Chris Tummings and Kieron Jecchinis. Chris is a founder member of the groundbreaking Black Theatre Co-operative (BTC), which toured the UK, Europe, USA and South Korea in the 1980s to critical acclaim. They also created popular 80s sitcom No Problem with London Weekend Television. Chris has recently appeared in the Olivier nominated musical The Big Life. Kieron’s recent theatre credits include To Kill a Mockingbird and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Manchester Royal Exchange. Film roles include Crazy Earl in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. The cast also includes Ian Mairs and Tayo Elesin.

2 Heavy’s Founder and Artistic Director Stephen Macaulay comments, ‘We have put together a great team for this production. I'm working with actors whom I've admired since I first began in theatre. Chris Tummings has been an inspiration to me, and paved the way for younger black actors to come through - we owe a lot to that generation; Kieron Jecchinis is amazing to work with and brings a wealth of experience to the stage; Tayo Elesin and Ian Mairs are both up-and-coming talents with something fresh and energetic to say.’

‘The actors really capture the essence of the script and project it with verve - the undercurrent and unspoken messages shout out loud. As an audience member, you find yourself involved in a conversation which is both controversial and delicate in its subject matter.’
