Chiming with the new Vivien archive at the V&A, and following the centenary year of Vivien Leigh’s birth, the Vivien season at the BFI and the Starring Vivien Leigh exhibition at the NPG, VIVIEN: Letter To Larry brings Vivien back into the heart of the West End.

2015 marks 50 years since Vivien Leigh was on an English stage, and 50 years since her final film, yet the extraordinary life and work of the actress forever remembered as Scarlett O’Hara, continues to fascinate. Letter To Larry brings the very essence of the celebrated actress to Jermyn Street Theatre over August after its critically acclaimed world premiere in Paris in 2013.

“…Astonishing. Devouring passion incarnated bewitchingly, almost as if by magic by an actress without match...” Le Nouvel Observateur

“…Exquisitely written…holds the audience in suspense…” Reg’Arts

“…This is the revelation of a magnificent actress. Macdonald’s poignant play is filled with emotion, infinite grace and surprising dynamism…” CULTUREBOX

“…Absolutely perfect…”

Donald Macdonald’s play Letter To Larry is an insightful exploration into the life and love of one of the twentieth century’s most glamorous yet vulnerable icons of stage and screen. When Laurence Olivier asks her for a divorce, Vivien’s response creates a worldwide sensation, and although she says she will ‘naturally do whatever he wishes”, she is determined to win him back. When a new revelation takes her to the edge, she fights for his love - and her life. But is it too late? The truth is revealed

The play exposes and explores her intimate and intense hopes - amid the heartbreak and tragic remain her humour and magic. “The press used to call us America’s most famous lovers- curious since we’re both British”. Letter To Larry reveals intimate truths about the actress with immediacy and intrigue and demonstrates how, amid heartbreak and tragedy, she retains her humour and magic.

Written by award-winning playwright Donald Macdonald, and starring Susie Lindeman, (Merchant Ivory’s Howards End, title role in Catherine, Maigret, Let Them Eat Cake- and 5 West End roles including opposite Vivien’s early co-star Rex Harrison) This season is in a new collaboration with Video Artist Mic Gruchy and Stage Director Cal McCrystal.
