Over 125 individuals in West Virginia potentially exposed to confirmed measles case
In Monongalia County, West Virginia, over 125 people from 30 counties have potentially been exposed to a confirmed case of measles. An additional 152 individuals, including 128 West Virginians and 24 out-of-state contacts, are also at risk of exposure.
Of those exposed, 62 lack documentation of adequate protection against measles and are considered high risk. These individuals are urged to quarantine until May 9 or 10, 2024, to prevent further spread of the disease.
This is the first known case of measles in West Virginia since 2009, highlighting the importance of vaccination in preventing outbreaks. The state health officer emphasizes the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine as a defense against measles.
The MMR vaccine is typically given in two doses, with the first dose recommended between 12 and 15 months of age. The second dose is recommended between four and six years and is required before entering Kindergarten in West Virginia.
Adults born after 1956 should also ensure they have received at least one dose of the MMR vaccine, with two doses recommended for certain groups such as healthcare personnel and college students.
Residents are urged to ensure they are up to date on their measles vaccinations, especially when traveling to and from countries with increased measles cases. Prevention is key in stopping the spread of measles and protecting vulnerable individuals in the community.
