Blizzard’s latest patch for World of Warcraft introduces new battle royale mode, Plunderstorm
Blizzard has surprised World of Warcraft players with the release of patch 10.2.6, which includes a new limited-time battle royale game mode called Plunderstorm. This pirate-themed mode offers a unique gameplay experience that differs from the regular WoW gameplay.
Plunderstorm introduces new mechanics such as a maximum of six abilities per player, no auto-attacks or classes, and no gear or inventory management. The mode will run for six weeks and is accessible to all WoW subscribers, whether they play the modern version of the game or WoW Classic.
Players create new characters specifically for Plunderstorm and can queue solo or with a partner to participate in matches. Battles take place in the Arathi Highlands, with up to 60 players competing to be the last pirate standing by leveling up their characters through PvP and PvE encounters.
Drawing inspiration from various genres like MOBAs and RTS games, Plunderstorm features unique combat mechanics with skill-shot spells and consumables. The mode was not tested on the game’s public test realm and will not support player-made add-ons, aiming to provide a surprise and unique experience for all players.
The goal of Plunderstorm is to bring together different groups of WoW players and provide a simplified, engaging experience for both new and returning players. Cosmetic rewards are available through a new Renown reward track, and the mode is designed to be accessible and enjoyable without the need for in-depth guides.
Plunderstorm is just the beginning of Blizzard’s plans for the future of WoW, with updates for WoW Classic and Dragonflight, as well as the launch of Cataclysm Classic and The War Within expansion expected later this year. Players can look forward to more excitement and surprises as Blizzard continues to evolve the World of Warcraft.
