Populist Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico Shot in Attempted Assassination
In a shocking turn of events, Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, was shot multiple times in what authorities are calling an “attempted assassination.” The incident occurred while Fico was greeting members of the public in Handlova, Slovakia, leaving him in a life-threatening condition. The suspect has been arrested following the shooting.
Fico, who was elected as the leader of the leftist Smer party just last year, has been a controversial figure in Slovakian politics. He has faced criticism over his handling of public radio and television overhaul, his pro-Russian stance, and his ties with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
In response to the attack, President Zuzana Čaputová condemned the violence and called for patience as more information becomes available. International leaders, including Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Joe Biden, and Ursula von der Leyen, have expressed their support for Fico’s recovery and have denounced the violence.
Opposition parties in Slovakia have called off a planned protest against the public broadcasting overhaul, instead condemning the attack on Fico and calling for unity in the face of such violence. Fico’s close ally, Peter Pellegrini, referred to the attack as an “unprecedented threat to Slovak democracy” and urged for political differences to be resolved peacefully.
As Fico is transported to a hospital in Banská Bystrica for treatment, the nation is left grappling with the aftermath of this shocking incident. The full extent of Fico’s injuries and the motive behind the attack remain unclear, but one thing is certain – the political landscape in Slovakia has been forever altered by this act of violence.
