In the upcoming primary election in June, Rep. Derrick Van Orden is leading a group of House Republicans intent on defeating Rep. Bob Good, citing his lack of commitment to governing. Good, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, has been embroiled in internal GOP infighting that has left the party’s agenda in disarray.
Support for Good has come from fellow hardline House GOP members such as Reps. Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, and Chip Roy, who believe in a no-compromise approach. However, John McGuire, another primary opponent of Good, has criticized him for his conduct and name-calling of fellow Republicans, calling him a “no solutions kind of guy.”
The battle over the direction of the House GOP majority has intensified, with Good’s district in rural Virginia serving as a focal point. McGuire has gained support from House Armed Services Chairman Mike Rogers, who called Good a “danger to our country” at a private fundraiser.
Good’s support for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the GOP presidential primary has become the subject of attack ads by outside groups. Despite this, Good remains aligned with former President Donald Trump and has dismissed questions about his past endorsements. On the other hand, McGuire has received endorsements from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and former Trump Cabinet member Rep. Ryan Zinke, who have criticized Good’s trustworthiness.
While Trump has not yet endorsed anyone in the race, some of his allies are working to prevent him from undercutting Good’s campaign. The primary election in June will be an important moment for the future direction of the House GOP and the party’s agenda.
