The US Department of Agriculture has issued a recall of over 16,000 pounds of ground beef produced by Cargill Meat Solutions due to potential E. Coli contamination. The affected packages, with lot codes 117 and 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P”, were produced between April 26 and 27 and shipped to Walmart stores nationwide.
The strain of E. Coli found in the beef is O157:H7, the same strain that prompted a public health alert last month when it was discovered in packages of Greater Omaha Packing Co. beef. While there have been no reported illnesses linked to the contaminated ground beef, consumers who have purchased the affected packages are advised to either throw them away or return them to the store.
E. Coli bacteria can cause a range of gastrointestinal illnesses, from mild to life-threatening. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, with infections typically occurring three to four days after exposure. If consumers experience any of these symptoms, they are urged to seek medical attention immediately.
The FDA and CDC are currently investigating a multistate outbreak of E. Coli that may be linked to organic walnuts sold in food co-ops or natural food stores. As the investigation continues, consumers are reminded to practice safe food handling and preparation to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
