Unmanned Drone Attack Targets Non-Residential Building in Western Russian City
On September 3, an unmanned drone attack shook the city of Kurchatov in western Russia. The incident, confirmed by the governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, raised concerns about escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine. While the governor did not disclose the specific target, an unnamed source quoted by Ukraine’s Babel online outlet alleged that the drone hit a building owned by Russia’s FSB security service.
This incident comes on the heels of another reported drone attack on September 1, in which a Ukrainian drone damaged a building facade in the same city. Kurchatov, a city known for housing a major nuclear plant, was spared any impact on its facilities during both incidents.
Prompt response from emergency services helped extinguish the fires caused by the drone attack. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Governor Starovoit held Ukrainian drones responsible for both attacks, yet the Ukrainian government has yet to comment on the allegations made by their Russian counterparts.
Investigations into these drone attacks in Kurchatov remain ongoing, as authorities pursue leads to determine the motive and origin of the attacks. The incidents have once again underscored the simmering tensions between Russia and Ukraine, increasingly becoming subjects of concern on the international stage.
