Thousands Killed and Missing in Deadly Flooding in Libya’s Derna
In a devastating turn of events, the eastern city of Derna in Libya has been hit by severe flooding caused by two broken dams, leading to the deaths of thousands and leaving thousands more missing. The catastrophic floods have left the city in ruins and created a humanitarian crisis of unimaginable proportions.
While the exact death toll remains uncertain, official estimates have been provided by various organizations. The United Nations, relying on data from the Libyan Red Crescent, has reported a staggering 11,300 deaths. However, doubts have been raised by the Red Crescent spokesperson regarding the accuracy of these figures. The World Health Organization has confirmed 3,922 deaths, while the health minister for the Libyan eastern government has reported 3,283 deaths.
With the death toll mounting, authorities have resorted to burying over 1,000 victims in mass graves; a practice that aid groups warn against due to the potential risks it poses. Moreover, the situation has been compounded by reports of 150 cases of poisoning caused by polluted water, further increasing the risk of infection for the survivors.
The displaced residents of Derna are now facing a critical dilemma. They must decide whether to stay and face the risk of infection or attempt to flee through areas where flooding has displaced landmines, further endangering their lives. The floods have also shifted landmines and other unexploded ordnance from years of conflict, posing an additional threat to those already displaced.
In response to this dire situation, aid organizations have mobilized and flown in emergency aid, but the scale of the disaster demands further assistance. The French government has agreed to establish a field hospital in Derna, providing much-needed medical aid to those affected. Tragically, three Greek rescuers lost their lives in a road accident while en route to Derna, and two more remain missing.
Despite the ongoing conflict and division between the western and eastern regions of Libya, volunteers from the west have shown incredible solidarity, bringing aid to their fellow countrymen in the east. This unprecedented disaster has even resulted in some coordination between the rival administrations in the west and east, demonstrating the urgency of the situation.
Looking ahead, the focus will soon shift towards reconstruction efforts. However, with past experiences indicating that reconstruction often reopens existing fault-lines, it is anticipated that this tragedy may further widen the divide within the country.
As the world grapples with the immense toll of this disaster, it is crucial to continue providing aid and support to the people of Derna, ensuring that they receive the help they need during this time of unprecedented crisis.
