Actors’ Chemistry Tests Evolve in Anne Hathaway’s Latest Film
In a recent interview, Anne Hathaway opened up about the evolution of chemistry tests for actors, particularly in her latest movie “The Idea of You.” The actress revealed that in the past, actors were often asked to kiss multiple co-stars in order to test for chemistry, a practice she found uncomfortable.
As a producer of “The Idea of You,” however, Hathaway had direct input in how chemistry reads were conducted for potential co-stars. Instead of the traditional awkward kisses, the chemistry reads for this film involved actors choosing a song for their character and performing a short improv with Hathaway.
Nicholas Galitzine ultimately won the part after dancing to a song by Alabama Shakes with Hathaway during his chemistry read. Hathaway described the experience as easy and natural, with everyone focused on the scene rather than trying to impress.
“The Idea of You” premiered at the SXSW Film Festival to positive reviews and is set to begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video on May 2. The film’s refreshing approach to chemistry tests reflects a shift in the industry towards more respectful and collaborative casting processes. Hathaway’s influence as both a producer and actor has helped shape a new standard for chemistry reads in Hollywood.
