Google Releases Most Searched Health Questions of 2023; Expert Answers Provided
In a recent study conducted by Google, it has been revealed that people are increasingly turning to the internet for answers to their health-related queries. The tech giant has released the top health questions searched by users in 2023, shedding light on the concerns that people have regarding their well-being.
Leading the pack of most sought-after information was the highly contagious strep throat. Dr. Todd Ellerin, Chief of Infectious Diseases at South Shore Health, stepped in to provide answers. According to Dr. Ellerin, strep throat is indeed highly contagious, with about 25% of household contacts contracting an additional case. To prevent its spread, individuals are advised to avoid sharing liquids and foods, and to practice good hygiene. It is important to note that after 24 hours of being on antibiotics, a person with strep throat is no longer contagious, Dr. Ellerin added.
Another frequently searched question was how to lower cholesterol. Dr. Ellerin stressed the significance of maintaining a balanced, healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise to reduce cholesterol levels. He also emphasized the efficacy of statins, which are medical options for lowering cholesterol, specifically LDL (bad cholesterol). The ultimate goal, according to Dr. Ellerin, is to have LDL levels under 100, particularly for those who have heart disease or diabetes. Cardiologists recommend even lower levels, below 60, for individuals who have experienced a heart attack in the past.
Addressing the concern of bloating, users sought ways to prevent and alleviate this discomfort. Dr. Ellerin advised the consumption of plenty of water, the avoidance of excessive air intake (such as chewing gum), and regular exercise to reduce bloating. However, he cautioned that chronic bloating should be evaluated to determine any underlying medical conditions, as it could signify a serious health issue. In milder cases, individuals may find relief through the use of simethicone, a medication commonly known as Gas-X.
Expressing his gratitude for the engaging questions from the audience, Dr. Ellerin commended their impressive commitment to maintaining good health. In an era where information is easily accessible, seeking reliable answers from medical professionals remains crucial for staying informed and making informed decisions about one’s well-being.
As the search for health information continues to grow, it is imperative that individuals remember to consult trusted sources and professionals, such as Dr. Ellerin, to ensure accurate and reliable information. With the help of technology and experts like Dr. Ellerin, individuals can navigate their health concerns with confidence and make educated choices for a healthier future.
