Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Completes Safety Review for SpaceX’s Starship Rocket
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently completed its safety review for SpaceX’s highly anticipated second test flight of the Starship rocket. The agency’s thorough review focused primarily on public health, safety, and property.
During this comprehensive safety assessment, the FAA evaluated several crucial aspects of SpaceX’s operations. They assessed SpaceX’s safety organization, system safety processes, flight safety analysis, and risk criteria for launch, reentry, and vehicle disposal. This meticulous examination aims to ensure the safety of both the public and the surrounding environment.
Now that the safety review is complete, the next step in the process is the environmental review. In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), this evaluation will assess any potential impacts on the environment caused by the test flight. On October 5, the FAA submitted its final biological assessment to the FWS, which finalized their review on October 19.
The formal Endangered Species Act consultation has already commenced between the FAA and the FWS. This crucial consultation process involves the sharing of vital information about the project and the species or critical habitat that may be affected. Additionally, the FWS will provide conservation recommendations aimed at furthering the recovery of any listed species, along with measures to minimize potential harm to them.
The environmental review is considered the final major element before the FAA makes its official license determination for the second test flight. SpaceX has already made significant preparations for the upcoming test flight, including a wet dress rehearsal and the stacking of the rocket’s components. The company is eagerly awaiting regulatory approval to proceed with the test flight.
This upcoming test flight holds immense significance not only for SpaceX but also for NASA’s Human Landing System Program. The success of SpaceX’s test flights plays a crucial role in determining the schedule for the program.
