Heavy Rains Cause Major Flooding in UAE and Oman
Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have caused major flooding, leaving vehicles abandoned on roadways in Dubai. The neighboring country of Oman has also been hit hard, with the death toll rising to 18 and others still missing due to the severe weather.
Dubai International Airport has been disrupted by whipping winds, leading to flight delays and cancellations. Over 120 millimeters of rain has fallen in Dubai, with more expected in the coming days. Police and emergency personnel have been navigating the flooded streets, with lightning even striking the iconic Burj Khalifa.
Schools in the UAE have been forced to shut down, and many employees are working remotely as the storm continues to batter the region. Tanker trucks have been deployed to pump away water from the flooded areas, but some homes have still been affected.
The lack of drainage infrastructure in the UAE has been highlighted as a major issue, causing flooding during rare rainfall events. The rain has also fallen in Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, although the impact has not been as severe as in the UAE and Oman.
In Oman, 18 people have been killed due to the heavy rains, including 10 schoolchildren who were swept away in a vehicle. The region is bracing for more severe weather in the coming days, and authorities are urging residents to take precautions and stay safe during this extreme weather event.
