Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Found Guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter in “Rust” Shooting
In a high-profile case that has captivated the entertainment industry, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting on the set of the film “Rust.” The jury in New Mexico delivered the verdict after a trial that focused on the tragic events that unfolded in 2021, when actor Alec Baldwin held a prop gun that fired live ammunition, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
Gutierrez-Reed, who was also acquitted of tampering with evidence, could face up to three years in state prison pending sentencing. The armorer showed little emotion as the verdict was read and was taken into custody. Prosecutors argued that Gutierrez-Reed was negligent and careless in her handling of weapons, while her attorney blamed Baldwin for the tragic death of Hutchins.
During the trial, jurors heard testimony from witnesses, including Souza and the film’s safety coordinator Dave Halls. Jurors cited Gutierrez-Reed’s failure to properly check weapons as a key factor in their decision. First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies called Hutchins’ death preventable and tragic, emphasizing the need for strict safety protocols on film sets.
Gutierrez-Reed will remain in custody pending sentencing by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, with a date yet to be determined. Her attorney has requested time to prepare for the sentencing, which is expected to take place in April. The verdict in this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety and accountability in the film industry, as the repercussions of negligence can have devastating consequences.
