NASA’s Astronaut Training Program Graduates Just 10 Candidates
Being an astronaut is not your average 9-5 job. Astronauts face unique challenges such as changes in eyesight, brittle bones, and muscle atrophy due to extended periods in microgravity. Despite these risks, a whopping 12,000 individuals applied for NASA’s astronaut training program in 2021.
After a rigorous selection process, just 10 individuals graduated from the program on Tuesday. These astronauts will now embark on two years of intensive training before they can head to space. With a starting salary of $152,000 a year and extensive travel requirements, the job of an astronaut is demanding both mentally and physically.
The duties of an astronaut include conducting operations in space, conducting research experiments, and serving as a public face of NASA. Applicants must have a background in piloting or science, engineering, or medicine to be considered for the program. Interviews, medical screenings, and additional assessments are required for final consideration.
Looking ahead, NASA is focused on returning humans to the moon and eventually sending a crewed mission to Mars. The space agency is now accepting applications for its next astronaut class, offering individuals the opportunity to be part of these historic missions.
For those brave souls who dream of exploring the final frontier, the path to becoming an astronaut is challenging but incredibly rewarding. With dedication, passion, and a thirst for adventure, the stars could be within reach.
