The Astros have made the decision to option struggling first baseman José Abreu to their spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Fla. Abreu, a three-time All-Star and former American League MVP winner, has been struggling at the plate this season, recording just seven hits in his first 71 at-bats.
The optioning of Abreu came after a “great” conversation between the player, Astros coaching staff, and front office. Abreu, a veteran player with more than five years of major-league service time, agreed to the move. There is no set timetable for his return to the major leagues, but it is expected to be an extended stay in Florida.
General manager Dana Brown and other Astros officials may travel to Florida to monitor Abreu’s progress. The player did not report to Minute Maid Park on Tuesday and was unavailable for comment. The move will not be official until Wednesday, leaving Houston a player short for Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians.
In an ESPN interview published on Tuesday, Abreu expressed feeling “embarrassed” about his performance in Houston. The Astros, who are currently 10 games below .500 and 6 ½ games back in the American League West, felt they could not afford to wait any longer on Abreu. His defensive struggles also played a role in the decision to option him to Florida.
Fans will have to wait and see how the seasoned player responds to this setback and whether he can make improvements during his time at the spring training complex. Stay tuned for updates on Abreu’s progress and potential return to the major leagues.
