Kirk Cousins, the quarterback recovering from a torn right Achilles, has made a significant decision to join the Atlanta Falcons. In an interview with Scott Van Pelt, Cousins discussed his reasons for choosing the Falcons, highlighting their strong football commitment and the opportunity to retire as a Falcon if he performs well. He is aiming to be back at full speed for practice by the end of the team’s June mandatory minicamp.
Having played in 150 games with 145 starts, Cousins has proven himself as a talented player, making Pro Bowls in three of his past five seasons. He was on track for a successful season before his injury. Despite leaving the Minnesota Vikings behind, Cousins expressed gratitude to the team and the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, calling it a bittersweet day.
Feeling at home in Atlanta, Cousins mentioned that it is a familiar and comfortable place for both him and his wife, Julie. He praised the Falcons organization, particularly highlighting the alignment he sees from team owner Arthur Blank, GM Terry Fontenot, and coach Raheem Morris. Cousins feels confident in the leadership of the team, especially after positive interactions with Fontenot, who was recommended to him by Drew Brees.
Cousins was recruited by Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts, who expressed the team’s desire for him to lead them to success. After speaking with Pitts, along with other players such as Drake London and Bijan Robinson, Cousins was impressed by their shared goal of winning. He hopes to replicate the Falcons’ success during the 2016 season and create similar memorable moments as a player with Atlanta.
