A Public Health Crisis: Over 50 Overdoses in Austin Lead to 8 Suspected Deaths
Austin, TX – The city of Austin is currently facing a public health emergency as over 50 people have overdosed in just two days, resulting in 8 suspected deaths. City officials have declared an “outbreak” of opioid overdoses after the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services received more than 50 overdose-related calls in a single day, a significant increase from their usual call volume.
This surge in overdoses is the largest since 2015 when K2, a synthetic marijuana compound, impacted the community. The patients affected were found in different areas of Austin, representing a diverse range of ages and demographics.
Emergency responders have been working tirelessly to combat the overdoses, handing out over 200 Narcan kits to those affected and residents in order to combat the overdose effects. Police are currently investigating and looking to hold accountable those responsible for distributing fentanyl, which is suspected to be the cause of the overdoses.
Authorities are urging everyone to carry a Narcan kit and are taking measures to address the ongoing opioid crisis in the area. Austin Public Health has received funding to help prepare for such emergencies, distributing 30,000 doses of naloxone in the community to combat the crisis.
Efforts are ongoing to investigate and remediate the issue as the city continues to grapple with the devastating impact of these overdoses. The community is coming together to support those affected and to raise awareness about the dangers of opioid misuse.
