In a historic victory for workers at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant, the United Auto Workers (UAW) unionization effort has succeeded with a final vote of 2,628-985 in favor of union representation. The UAW needed to secure 50% plus one vote to unionize, a goal that had previously fallen short in elections with 47% and 48% support.
Supporters from other right-to-work states came to witness the milestone victory, with Tennessee Representative Justin Jones showing his support for unionization. President Joe Biden also congratulated the workers on their successful organization.
Hamilton County Mayor praised the workers for their achievement and expressed hope that the UAW will learn from their success. Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly also supported the workers’ choice, emphasizing the importance of workers having a voice in their workplace.
The bargaining process with the union is set to begin soon, with Volkswagen thanking the Chattanooga workers for participating in the election. This victory marks a significant moment for the workers at the Chattanooga plant, demonstrating the power of collective action and the right to union representation in the workplace.
