Former California police chief and yoga teacher, Alan Hostetter, has been handed an 11-year prison sentence for his involvement in the riot that took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Hostetter was found guilty of multiple charges, including conspiring to obstruct Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s electoral victory, carrying a hatchet onto Capitol grounds, and disorderly conduct.
Despite his role in leading pro-Trump protests and advocating for the execution of government “traitors,” Hostetter did not physically enter the Capitol building or engage in any violent acts against law enforcement officials during the riot. However, the prosecution argued that his extensive background in law enforcement should have made him more aware of the consequences of his actions and labeled his behavior as terrorism.
Hostetter maintained his innocence throughout the trial and went as far as claiming that the Capitol riot was a “false flag” attack orchestrated by the federal government. His background includes serving in the U.S. Army, working for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and even holding the position of police chief in La Habra, California.
After retiring from law enforcement, Hostetter shifted his focus to becoming a yoga instructor and sound healer. However, his attention soon shifted to leading protests against what he perceived as government overreach during the COVID-19 pandemic. He founded a nonprofit organization called the American Phoenix Project, gaining traction within Southern California’s right-wing political sphere.
Throughout his case, Hostetter openly endorsed various baseless conspiracy theories, alleging that he himself was the target of a long-standing government plot. Crucial evidence against him came from his co-defendant Russell Taylor, who testified against Hostetter after pleading guilty to conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.
The sentencing of Alan Hostetter serves as a significant moment in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riot. It highlights the accountability that must be faced by those who contributed to the chaos and violence that unfolded on that day. As the nation continues to grapple with the consequences of the insurrection, this case sheds light on the intricate web of actors involved and the varied backgrounds they come from.
