YouTube Implements Restrictions on Third-Party Apps Blocking Ads
YouTube has announced that it will be intentionally limiting the playback of videos on third-party apps that block ads. This move comes after users of such apps have reported encountering playback issues or error messages while trying to watch videos on the platform.
Apps that use the YouTube API to access videos are required to follow the platform’s terms of service, which includes not blocking ads. Some of the specific apps that are believed to be violating these rules include FreeTube, LibreTube, and Piped.
This is not the first time YouTube has cracked down on ad-blocking practices. Last year, the platform ran scripts to detect ad-blocking extensions in web browsers. A survey conducted by Ghostery found that Google’s crackdown on ad blocking made 49 percent of respondents more inclined to use ad blockers.
However, not everyone is pleased with YouTube’s latest decision. A staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation criticized the move, stating that it violates privacy and security.
On the other hand, YouTube has defended its actions by stating that ads play a crucial role in supporting creators and enabling users worldwide to access content on the platform. The platform believes that allowing ads to be blocked hinders the financial support that creators rely on.
Overall, this latest development from YouTube highlights the ongoing battle between platforms and users over the use of ad blocking technology.
