General Motors is set to relocate its global headquarters from the iconic Renaissance Center to the Hudson’s Detroit building. The move, confirmed by a source familiar with the plan but who requested anonymity, is part of a 1.5 million-square-foot development project by Bedrock, owned by Dan Gilbert.
GM CEO Mary Barra and Dan Gilbert will hold a news conference at the new location to officially announce the move. GM originally purchased space at the Renaissance Center in 1996 and now plans to explore redevelopment options for the site.
The Hudson’s site project will feature a 49-story skyscraper with an Edition Hotel and luxury condos. The decision to move is said to be influenced by the reduced number of workers at the RenCen due to remote work during the pandemic. However, GM has not disclosed the exact number of employees currently working at the Renaissance Center.
Real estate expert Steve Morris has raised questions about who will fill the vacant space at the RenCen once GM completes its move.
